A Message from the President
Opening the Museum and Looking Ahead…
Springtime for the Historical Society means opening the museum, getting programs ready, preparing grant applications, and considering other items too numerous to list. The goal, as always, is to do these things well while meeting the same high standards we set for ourselves in the past.
The museum’s opening will be April 11 on the same Friday/Saturday schedule we have used for the past several years: open 12 pm to 4 pm. We will continue to focus on the musical heritage of Floyd County and the mountains of the Blue Ridge. Look for new exhibits to be added to the ones shared in 2024.
New Projects and Exhibits
One of the exciting projects we are working on involves a partnership with the Wilderness Road Museum in Pulaski County. They asked, and we agreed to pursue a Tobacco Grant to produce a documentary on the Patriots of ’76 who were from this area of Virginia. We are excited to be part of this project. We look forward to sharing the history of Floyd County’s Revolutionary War veterans.
Those same Revolutionary War veterans will be the basis of the 2026 museum display. We will recount the story of the first American patriots and share stories of our heroes from 1776 to the present. We will be celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by saluting local men and women who served to create and perpetuate our wonderful country.
Room for Everyone…
We have lots of other things we are working on, so keep up to date by checking our website, stopping by the museum, attending our programs, and reading our newsletter and emails. There are many things that we each can do to continue preserving the rich history of Floyd County. As always, we can use help in the museum. Contact our office manager to learn about the numerous volunteer opportunities that are available.
I hope that spring finds you well and that we will see you at the museum.
