Honoring Our Military: 250 Years of Service
The Society’s 2026 Calendar is a visual and narrative overview of Floyd County residents’ experiences during wartimes, from the American Revolution through the Vietnam War. Its pages are filled with photos, old and new, that bring to life the faces and places that connect to those conflicts. You’ll also find some poignant stories—including the eerie tales of mothers’ visions of the deaths of soldier-sons—and even a recipe for communion bread, an integral part of the church life of the many Floyd folks whose faith required they serve their country as non-combatants. Of historic and cultural interest to all, and of special and personal significance to many, this year’s calendar will be a keepsake after it serves its day-marking purpose.
Topics and items included in the calendar:
- Revolutionary War soldiers who lived in or are buried in the current limits of Floyd County, VA, are highlighted throughout the calendar.
- Stories, photos and information about the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the First World War, the Second World War, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
- Veterans of Foreign Wars: Orland Phillips VFW Post 7854, and the Floyd American Legion
- Radford Arsenal, Conscious Objectors, Pine Creek Cemetery, and the USS Floyd County (a tank landing ship built for the United States Navy during World War II; it also served during the Korean and Vietnam wars).
